Mycoplasma contamination in cell culture is one of the major problems in both research and industrial production.
It is estimated that over 80% of cell lines may be contaminated with Mycoplasma. Mycoplasma contamination
can cause experimental results to be unreliable and unproductive, and sometimes can even cause the
loss of precious cell lines.
Some of the anti-mycoplasma reagents being sold commercially for the removal of
mycoplasma were developed over fifteen years ago and contain ingredients such
as macrolides or tetracycline; both of which are quinolones. Some mycoplasmas
have developed resistance towards these reagents.
To date, no consistent and permanent alterations that affect the eukaryotic cells during and after the treatment
have been detected.
